6 to 8 servings

1/4 cup Butter Flavor Crisco all-vegetable shortening or 1/4 Butter Flavor Crisco stick
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1/3 cup maple syrup
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup chopped apples
Hard Sauce

Grease ovenproof 6-cup mold or pudding basin. Dust with granulated sugar. Set aside.
In medium mixing bowl combine Butter Flavor Crisco, brown sugar, egg and maple syrup. Beat at low speed of electric mixer until blended.
Add flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, ginger and buttermilk. Beat at medium speed until blended, scraping bowl frequently. Stir in apples. Spoon into mold. Cover mold tightly with double thickness of heavy-duty foil.
Place 1 inch water in Dutch oven. Place filled mold on rack in Dutch oven. Cover.
Cook over high heat until water boils. Reduce heat. Cook at very slow boil over low heat for 2 to 2-1/2 hours, or until wooden pick inserted in center of pudding comes out clean. (If necessary to add water during steaming, lift lid and quickly add boiling water.)
Remove mold from Dutch oven. Remove foil. Allow steam to escape before unmolding. Serve with Hard Sauce.
