| OATMEAL SODA BREAD |

Makes 1 loaf bread3 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/3 cup sugar 2-1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 3 tablespoons CRISCO all-vegetable shortening or 3 tablespoons CRISCO Stick 1-3/4 cups uncooked old-fashioned oats 1 egg, beaten 1-3/4 cups buttermilk Preheat oven to 375ºF. Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Cut in Crisco with a pastry blender or 2 knives. Mix in oats. Gradually add a mixture of egg and buttermilk, stirring until well blended. Turn mixture into a greased 9- x 1-1/2-inch round layer cake pan; spread evenly. Cut a deep cross into top. Bake at 375ºF for 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. |
