NUTMEG CRULLERS Print E-mail
Makes 45 crullers

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 egg
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons CRISCO all-vegetable shortening or 2 tablespoons CRISCO Stick, melted
CRISCO Shortening or CRISCO Stick for deep frying
Sugar for coating


Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
Beat egg, brown sugar, milk, and vanilla extract together. Stir in flour mixture and 2 tablespoons melted Crisco; mix well.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 15 x 12-inch rectangle. Cut into 4 x 1-inch strips.
Heat Crisco to 365ºF in a deep saucepan or deep fryer. Twist each dough strip tightly. Fry 6 at a time for about 1 minute or until golden brown; turn over once.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Coat crullers with sugar. Serve warn.
