Makes about 4 dozen pieces1 package active dry yeast 1 cup warm water (110F to 115F) 2 tablespoons sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons CRISCO all-vegetable shortening or 2 tablespoons CRISCO Stick 2-1/2 to 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour CRISCO Shortening or CRISCO Stick for deep frying Cinnamon Sugar 4 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a large mixer bowl. Add sugar, salt, 2 tablespoons Crisco, and 1-1/2 cups flour. Blend at low speed until moistened, then beat for 3 minutes at medium speed. Using a spoon, stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased deep bowl and turn to grease top. Cover; let rise in a warm place until doubled (about 1 hour). Heat Crisco to 365ºF in deep saucepan or deep fryer. Cut yeast dough into 1-inch pieces; stretch pieces slightly and fry in hot Crisco for 1-1/2 minutes or until golden brown; turn over once. Drain on paper towels. Shake in a bag with cinnamon sugar. Serve warm. |
